Dear Mr. McLean:
Thank you for the very special honor bestowed on me at the December 6, 2006 East Lyme Board of Selectmen meeting. The American Legion's national, state and local endorsement of Citizen Corps programs certainly adds the highest caliber of status to citizen involvement in preserving our nation's security. America's ability to prevent, prepare for and respond to any natural or human caused threat is enhanced exponentially through trained volunteers such as those who volunteer for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.
I fully recognize the level of honor bestowed on me and assure you my services shall be available as needed for as long as requested. As a 25 year Rotarian, I long ago committed to "Service Above Self" and though now fully retired, you can be assured I shall assist as requested for as long as I am able. As the American Legion well recognizes, life evolves, and it is important for us "old timers" to groom youthful leadership to enable the reins to be passed to those whose capabilities equal or surpass those of the instructor. In this light, I am confident this foundation now exists within the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (SCCOG) region for Citizen Corps programs to thrive and grow. Regional Citizen Corps programs have been ongoing in East Lyme, Waterford, and within the Mohegan Tribal Nation. Additional regional Citizen Corps programs are slated for Groton and New London in 2007 as well as additional courses for East Lyme and Waterford. It is with reasonable confidence of sustained Citizen Corps program success that I respectfully withdraw from wintry New England for our annual retirement sojourn (January/February) to Naples, Florida.
Thank you again for this very special honor. My Citizen Corps/CERT service pales in comparison to those Legionnaires who have given so much, but it is one way in which I, too, can continue to serve America. I am most grateful.
Sincerely yours,
Victor H. Ferry, Ph.D.
